Every once in a while, something will come across my desk that piques my interest. Last week I received a promotional CD from James Vincent McMorrow. I wasn't all that familiar with the guy but he's a nice Irish lad so I decided to give it a listen.
Wowsa. I can't say it's actually "feel-good" music. It's kind of somber actually. But I wouldn't expect much else out of the Emerald Isle, where brooding is a genre all on its own. But the harmonies are beautiful, a little reminiscent of southern American blues. McMorrow's voice is soulful and sad and his lyrics are stunning.
The only downside that I can see from McMorrow's debut is that he sounds a little like John Mayer. Not that Mayer isn't a good vocalist. But here in the states, his reputation precedes him. Also, a lot of the songs on "Early in the Morning" are too similar.
Still, it is very beautiful music and I expect great things to come from this young man.
